How to locate your internal stop tap

Your internal stop tap is a very important part of your internal plumbing system.

It’s important that you know where it is and how to operate it.

It may be located under the kitchen sink, in a downstairs bathroom or perhaps in the

utility room.

If you can’t find your internal stop tap, why not ask a neighbour where theirs is as

it’s likely you’ll find yours in the same place.

Sometimes home alterations may mean the stop tap has been relocated or even covered up

by fixtures.

Once you’ve found your internal stop tap, check that it isolates, that it turns fully

by hand, to a stop, and isolates the supply to your home.

Stop taps usually isolate in a clockwise direction and anti clockwise to reopen.

So bear in mind your stop tap may isolate the whole of the property or just the cold

kitchen tap and if you do find a problem with your stop tap get it fixed urgently, you never

know when you may need it.

It’s always a good idea to keep the name and a number of a water safe approved plumber

in a safe place in case there is an emergency.

You might also chose to put that number on a sticker next to the stop tap or tie it on

a string label.

It’s also a good idea to keep the number for South West Water in the same place.
