I drove through North Carolina's Outer Banks. This is what I saw.

so I wanted to explore a coastal

community of North Carolina and show a

barrier island if you've heard of the

Outer Banks that's sort of where we're

going if you look at a map you can see

that the entire coast of North Carolina

is separated from the mainland by a

waterway in some cases like in the upper

Outer Banks the coastal communities are

separated by a large sound the further

south you go and the north carolina

communities are separated from the

mainland by smaller sounds or in many

cases just a small waterway that's

called the intercostal waterway this

intercostal waterway actually stretches

from Virginia all the way down to the

tip of Florida meaning a majority of the

bottom half of the US East Coast is

technically a series of island chains in

this video we're gonna head across the

inner coastal highway near Wilmington

North Carolina and explore the North

Carolina barrier island called Pleasure

Island this is the only bridge to and

from this island

we'll start at the north end of the

island at a place called Freeman Park on

which you can drive your trucks and camp

on the beach

it gets pretty nuts here we almost had

our tent run over by a drunk guy who is

doing donuts at 3 a.m. once as we head

south from Freeman Park towards the city

of Carolina Beach it's about 2 p.m. on a

Tuesday September 24 2009 teen

the entire island is about seven miles

long and it's very narrow only about a

mile wide on this trip we're gonna go

from the north end to the south end of

this island which takes about a half

hour round trip this is the main road up

and down the island in fact the islands

only real highway if you can call it

that

[Music]

Pleasure Island is mostly made up of the

beach communities of Carolina Beach and

Kure Beach the population of this entire

island is just about 10,000 people

[Music]

as you can tell these roads are a little

rough this area was hit hard by

Hurricane Florence a year prior and was

also impacted by three other hurricanes

or tropical storms in the two years

before him and just a few weeks ago

hurricane durian grazed the coast here

and left a lot of sand piles down trees

and minor damage the worst of durian hit

about a hundred and fifty miles to the

north in another barrier island called

oka croak

Pleasure Island has a lot of year-long

residents but like most of the Outer

Banks it's a big tourist draw and many

of the houses will see our summer

rentals as you can imagine this part of

North Carolina is appealing to people

from the northeastern states like New

York and New Jersey who don't want to go

all the way down and deal with Florida

this islands limited in terms of things

to do but it can still have some spirit

it's home to a handful of fast-food

restaurants including McDonald's there's

a bunch of ice cream shops bars small

restaurants hotels and of course tacky

Beach stores

this entire island has three total piers

this is the furthest South Pier if you

keep going another mile or so south you

come to an aquarium it has fish and

stuff and that's pretty much the end of

this island

[Music]

[Music]

[Music]

[Music]

[Music]

as you can see it looks like there's a

lot of construction going on on this

island typically there's a lot of

construction on the Outer Banks as

smaller homes are constantly being

leveled to make room for larger fancier

homes who want to view the ocean but the

recent hurricane damage is also a part

of the reason there's so much

construction going on

and we're gonna end this tour as we pull

back into the city of Carolina Beach

once again and go out onto the coast
